Silent Night

As I was pouring the coffee this morning my bride asked “Did you hear the coyotes last night?”

I confessed that I’d managed to sleep right through it.
“They were really singing!” she replied.
Maybe they were singing Christmas carols.
“I think they just wanted to survive” she wisely observed.
I imagine the full moon helped. This was the last full moon of the decade – certainly another reason to celebrate.
She has a wonderful gift for understanding the essentials of life.
I sometimes tend to overlook the fundamentals and look for “deeper” meanings. Like the motive behind that White Elephant gift. Seriously, who cares – it’s the thought that counts, right?
I wondered aloud: “Do you suppose we’d recognize the lyrics of coyote hymns?”
Songs of survival, reminders of the need to eat, rejoicing over the results of the hunt. The stuff that Thoreau pondered in Walden. Things that regular folks comprehend.
Coyote Carols might ask about the contents of the manger (food) and overlook the gifts of the Magi. Their Nativity Scene would focus less on the Lamb of God and more on the ewe that wandered off.
And while the shepherds, keeping watch over their flocks by night, were being distracted by the heavenly host?
Wyle and the wife would be composing a serenade for later. One that included familiar lyrics.
“…Sleep in heavenly peace.”
Time for more coffee.
Christmas blend?
